starbroken Character: Jack
Canon: Metal Fight Beyblade (Explosion)
Version: Anime
Canon Point: Episode 99, after losing to Tsubasa
Age: Unknown. Headcanoncally 17.
Gender: Male
History:There is almost canon information regarding Jack’s early childhood. Or any time before his first appearance in canon, actually. However, it’s possible to work out how it has to have been based on what’s given.
It’s stated that Jack used to be an exeptionally bad beyblader (spinning top user), actually ranking as one of the USA’s lowest, not having won a single fight. (It’s quite possibly that the reason for this lies in Jack’s artistic nature which distracted him from the direct fights.)
Regardless of that he was noticed though. A neurologist called Dr. Ziggurat found him and got Jack to agree to come with him to his school, where he would make him stronger.
After that Jack probably spent most of his life in the HD-Academy. That place basically aims to create perfect beybladers. It’s a pretty creepy place to grow up in as they don’t back down from scientifically experimenting on the kids. But even with these experiments, there are a lot of lessons and physical training as well. Being there, you will surely grow stronger... but it’s also a full-time job.
Ziggurat brought Jack there because his body was suited to be influenced by an invention called Arrange System, which exchanges power between the blader and their bey. This isn’t quite harmless, it makes the blader extremely dependant on their dosis of it and even changes the personality. Only few people can actually handle this, over 2000 children became permanently mentally and/or physically disabled in the testing process.
Jack however ‚just‘ became addicted to it and completely relied on it’s power from then on. His personality changes weren’t so much changes though as just a level-up to his usual personality. He became even more eccentric and his moods changed a lot easier. Basically a slightly psychotic mind got upgraded to a full-on lunatic. (More in the personality section).
But he also grew stonger, soon being second strongest of the school and possibly the entire United States. The strongest was a boy called Damian with whom I assume Jack had rather close contact. Despite little actual interaction on screen they always appear to be very in sync with each other.. It is logical that the best would stick which each other instead of mingling with others, given the elitist way of thinking at the school.
The real story starts with the world championship of beyblading though. Naturally Jack and Damian are both chosen to represent the USA. Alongside them a boy named Zeo gets on the team, who has only lately joined the school and proven Arrange System compatible. They call their team ‚Starbreaker‘ and get to the semi-final without much trouble. Easy enough, as Ziggurat appears to make some deals with other teams behind the curtains.
At this point Ziggurat wants to get a boy called Ryuuga into his Academy, planning to study his immense power (the power the entire Arrange System was based on). Jack is send out to go get him and soon opposes Ryuuga, asking for a battle... As he raises his launcher however, it is empty. Jack just laughs and Ryuuga is annoyed and fascinated by the bluntness with which he was... well, trolled.
To get a real battle with Jack he follows to the academy, where Jack and Ziggurat introduce Zeo as his opponent, rather than Jack, because Jack’s beyblade is not yet finished. Jack watches the fight, provocating Ryuuga in his flamboyant way. Ryuuga wins, destroys part of the school and leaves. Neither Jack nor Ziggurat seem very impressed.
And while Damian goes out to test his beyblade and actually gets two members of the Japanese team in hospital (where they stay, being comatose for more than just a few days), Jack’s bey is finished. Jack judges Killer Beafowl to be absolutely perfect for him and is ecstatic to test it out in the semi-final.
There he encounters Georg from the EU team ‚Excalibur‘ and beats him without much trouble, turning the stadium into an artwork. Right afterwards Damian beats the EU team‘s leader and Team Starbreaker gets to the final.
Their enemy in the final is the Japanese Team Gan Gan Galaxy (the main heroes of the anime). Due to Damian’s actions they are short two members though.
The first fight happens and Zeo is beaten. Next up is Jack and while the Japanese team is still discussing who will encounter him, Ryuuga enters the scene and (dundundun) says he will be the replacement member of the team and get the battle Jack promised to him.
Jack is delighted and for quite some time it seems like he would win. The artwork (a peacock carved into the stadium) is almost finished as the tables begin to turn. Ryuuga ends the fight, placing Beafowl as the peacocks eye, where Jack had originally planned Ryuuga’s bey to end. A moment later the enter artwork falls into pieces and so does Jack, mentally, unable to stand defeat and seeing his art destroyed.
Because of this Jack is not present during the final battle which Damian loses, leaving Gan Gan Galaxy as the world champions.
This would appear to be the perfect end of a season, but NO! Ziggurat, being a man with high goals and shady methods, has some more tricks up his sleeve. Actually, the defeat means nothing to him. And because of this he crashes the victory party with his henchmen, announcing that he has created a perfect energy source the ‚spiral force‘, which could bring great destruction or do great good, depending on who uses it. And this power, he is planning to sell. Like all big tragedies in the world happen. (Needless to say, the spiral force is also based on victim of the poor brainwashed boy Toby, but that’s another story.)
This announcement is not taken well by people and neither is the fact that Jack, Damian and Ziggurat’s other followers start up a random fight in the streets of New York that actually destroys quite a bit.
It ends without a result though and Jack and the others get back to Hades City, a city Ziggurat owns completely and also the place the Academy is located at. And this city... is also able to fly. And so Ziggurat raises the city into the air, powered by spiral force, demonstrating it’s might to the entire world.
Instead of going into detail about the political follow-ups this could have had... let’s get back to Jack.
He is inside the building, told to stop some of the Gan Gan Galaxy members that infiltrated the city. He ultimately ends up battling Tsubasa and then losing, while in the meantime Yuu destroys the Arrange System capsule he usually is using. Jack is completely crushed and breaks down in front of the remains, while the heroes just... leave him there. Nice guys.
And this is where Maison gets the poor boy.
Personality: Jack is about the most flamboyant person in the world. Like WHOA.
That colorful guy over there, painting a wall, breathing in ecstasy, rambling random praises? The one you stared wide-eyed at, not sure what to even think? That was Jack. And if you got the impression he was crazy? Well, you were right.
Jack’s heart and mind revolves around art completely. In everything he sees, hears and encounters is art. He judges things by their inspirational value and mostly nothing but that. People, too. He doesn’t like naive and childish people at all. Instead he likes stoic persons, who might appreciate his art... or could be turned into an exceptional artwork themselves.
Jack is artist with heart and soul. If he cannot let out the inspiration inside of him he might burst. He can and will make art out of about anything and is completely convinced of the genius of his work. For his art, he does not back down from hurting people. If he has to severely hurt someone in order for them to become part of his art then he will do so without a second thought. Actually he’s been known to purposefully calculate a hurt person as part of his artwork.
Jack does not really believe in feelings like friendship. Relationships with other people mean little to nothing to him. He does know what it’s like to have someone as a partner and understand each other on a deep level, but he would never apply a romantic term like ‚friends‘ to it. In a way, he thinks friendship and love are just ridiculous. Of course, this is partly due to the Arrange System, too. It is programmed to increase aversion to positive feelings like this.
But even without it: Jack is convinced that his art is above everything, especially other people’s feelings. When confronted with the fact that he hurt somebody deeply, he shrugs it off and laughs, replying that the other person does not understand (his art and him). He might even get angry about such a thing. The value of emotions is pretty lost on him and without someone putting serious work into him, Jack will be unable to change his point of view in this regard.
Oh, yes, the Arrange System. Where Jack originally only was a chaotic artist, he is now a complete madman. When he has set his mind on a potential artwork there is no stopping him. He acts euphoric, slightly insane, he laughs a lot (and not the kind of laugh someone right in his mind would use) and agressively pursues the fulfillment of his fantasies.
When he is stopped or critisized he easily turns angry, a screaming, desperate and childish (but very destructive) anger. In a way his sanity does not seem to be able to win over his emotions at all.
Jack isn’t stupid though. He can plan ahead a bit, even if the risk of getting distracted exists, and he is cruel in doing so. When not going on about art endlessly Jack is basically your perfect shounen anime villain. The gay-looking one, that is.
By no means Jack is a nice person. Under Arrange System influence he possibly would not mind stepping over corpses for art, but even without it he is uncaring of hurt happening around him. Jack is self-centered, completely so. The world should have his colors and his colors only.
All this does not mean he is anti-social though. Jack is an outgoing person. He talks a lot, he interacts a lot and he does so eccentrically and flamboyantly. He has a tendency to be really melodramatic about everything he says. Jack is an attention-whore. He makes sure to turn heads everywhere he walks. His bey-spirit-beast, a peacock, is providing a pretty accurate description of his personality actually.
He grins and laughs a lot, mocking people in his own way. ‚Beautiful‘, ‚excelllent‘ and ‚great‘ are his favourite words, clearly. He often shouts them out, mostly in regard of his own artworks, but also to situations he likes.
After a few minutes Jack probably already comes accross at so annoying that you want to throw him out again. He mentions art frequently, drawing a ton of comparisions and he certainyl does not hide his cruel nature either.
He mentions art frequently and tends to make unwanted comments about the artistic value of things. At time you have to wonder if he has even been listening to you at all.
An interesting person to be around, maybe, but not a pleasant one.
Fears: Jack is afraid of being unable to see colours. He needs his art, the colors of the world and without them he’d be lost. And by lost I mean that it could quite possibly crush him completely for some time.
Second to this, Jack is afraid of being unable to create art of his own. He can’t stand inspiration being stuck inside his head, it makes him feel mentally and physically ill.
Also, opposed to normal people, friendship and the likes rub Jack in the wrong way. He is able to get close to people after some time, but massive signs of positive, honest emotions towards him would annoy him and ... actually scare him a bit. At this point he is unable to handle such a thing.
Naturally it also scares him to be without the Arrange System, seeing that he appears to be truly addicted to it.
And a crazy headcanon: Jack can absolutely not stand Spagetthi. To the level of being slightly terrifyed of having to eat it. ... you don’t have to take this bit too seriously, but the point stands... Uhm.
Weaknesses: Under the Arrange System influence Jack is pretty much batshit insane. His moods chance fast, he has random fits of insane amusement, possibly hallucinations. While unfazed by insults and the likes, he gets extremely touchy about his art and if it is destroyed he might break down on the spot. That aspect might make it easy to mess with him once the right buttons are pushed.
Naturally his intuitive nature also prevents him from keeping calm. He doesn’t dive into things head over heels, but when he is exited his common sense leaves him.
Also there is a very good way to limit Jack’s ability to do about anything: Sensory overload. When confronted with too many different sources of inspiration, the desire to take all those in and convert them into art of his own will be so high that it could considerably slow down Jack’s responses to everything else around him.
(Additional to this, another bit of interpretation and headcanon: The mask Jack wears over half of his face is not solely a fashion accesoiry. It also serves to limit Jack’s vision, because the impressions from both eyes might distract him too much. His senses, powers and nerves have been messed with quite a lot after all.)
And Jack is not a physical fighter. While he is very muscular and strong, he has been trained to use spinning tops and not defend himself with just his body. For an experienced person it would be easy to take him down in a fight.
I also suppose that the loss of stimulations by the Arrange System would influence and weaken him, both physically and mentally. The longer he is away, the more breakdowns he might have. At the end of the road a more normal and sane Jack awaits, but that’s quite a way to go. With loss of Arrangements he also grows weaker with his beyblade.
Mundane Strengths/Abilities: > Jack is an artist. One hell of an artist. He can make sculptures, paint like a boss and just create art out of basically anything. And while his art might look chaotic at first sight, it’s definitely the work of a genius. Art of any kind is his area. Despite his looks, he knows exactly what he is talking about and has devoted his life to perfection of art in all kinds.
Jack’s art defies any proper classification. He does everything. The series doubtlessly only provides a few examples of all the things he would and could do.
For once, he’s a painter. Painting an entire room in weird color structures (using his hands) is Jack’s daily work. Paint everywhere, really. He seems to have painted quite a bit of Hades City, the walls are full of his art the closer you get to his room. He also likes to insert broken beyblades in his work, giving it a macabre and dark tone.
Painting is not the only thing he can do though.
Jack does sculptures out of stone, for example. For that he used his beyblade on the show, but I don’t doubt that he could do it himself as well.
The thing with Jack though is, that what you see on the show does not appear to cover the range of his artistic desires and abilities at all. Everything is art to Jack. Painting, sculputuring, rearranging... even a hurt person can be decorated into a work of art.
He might combine the techniques... make art out of food... hair...
Which is why this section is difficult to write. Jack and his inspiration is a thing that I will have to make up as I go a bit, because he does not seem to know any borders. I even assume he made his clothes himself, since they fit him so well.
It is just very safe to assume that Jack is good with his hands and very...very... very... creative.
I think he specialises in painting though.
Sensitivity/Magical Ability: Jack does not have any magic abilities. However, judging by the way he acts in canon, he does have a very special view on the world. He is extremely sensitve to colours and colour-schemes and very likely to recognize some things as art with an actual concept, that other characters would just dismiss as a mess.
(If allowed I would like to add the following headcanon: Jack is not synaestetic, but rather close to it. The Arrange System his messed with his sensory abilities so much, that his senses might connect on random occassions. Because of this Jack is able to convert about anything into a kind of painting.)
Oh and that beyblade, Killer Beafowl? Comes with projecting a semi-holographic Peacock to visually underline it’s attacks. It is not really an animal of it’s own, merely the spirit of the beyblade.
Supply List: Jack comes with a beyblade called Killer Beafowl. It’s basically a spinning top that he can fight with. It’s really powerful and can cut through objects without touching them by sending air blades. It’s also able to destroy hard stone and even create precise sculptures by this.
Beys are in general not to be underrated. They might look like spinning tops, but the series has established them as very powerful objects. In the past they served as weapons and despite not being used this way anymore, most present beys could fullfill this purpose just fine.
Aside from this and the launcher for it, Jack does only bring his clothes and the mask he is wearing, as well as a few things in his pockets. Those are his make-up (Lipstick in black and blue, an orange facial marker and a tiny package of purple eye-shadow) and a pencil.
Sample RP post: He had fainted. It was a natural reaction, supposedly, after screaming his lungs out for a long time – Jack hadn’t bothered to count the minutes, why would he? He had lost, he had lost
again. His art was destroyed – his beautiful art, how could anybody dare?- and the Arrange System which he depended so much on was broken.
What else than screaming was he supposed to have done? Jack didn’t know, Jack couldn’t pick up the pieces anymore. He had even noticed when hot tears had started to blur his make-up a bit. Neither had he noticed passing out on the ground in front of the remnants of the capsule.
When he woke up however, the capsule was gone and so was the futuristic-looking room he had been located in... Instead he was in.. some sort of old-fashioned entry hall?
At least the sudden change of scene kicked Jack out of his lost feeling a bit.
The young man with the red, wavy hair, the eccentric clothes and loads of make-up got up and looked around. His expression turned from a blank to a rather curious one. He was glad for the distraction, it pushed the pain back down his body, where it would wait... silently.
„This is
strange“, he whispered and his intonation still did not miss a certain dramatic effect.
In his head he automatically ran over options to redecorate the hallway and put his own style on it, but it wasn’t much of a conscious thought. The question ‚Where is this‘ got priority. As glad as he was to not be at his place of failure anymore, Jack couldn’t help wonder what this was about. He wasn’t overly shocked though, not as much as someone should be. Nothing could be stranger than his own mind after all, there was not much use getting confused over something as simple as the unaltered real world.
With unsure steps the young man made his way further into the house, absentmindedly letting his hand run over the walls and furniture.
